Tasked with a complex first article inspection need, a plastic molder in northwest Ohio was in a predicament. The manifold in question had hundreds of dimensions and the most sophisticated gage in house was an optical comparator. Measurement of true positions would be very difficult and evaluation of profiles impossible.
With enough crises on her plate, the interim quality manager contacted Inspection Engineering for inspection services. She sent parts, emailed a CAD model and went back to her other daily responsibilities.

To save time the CAD model was used to create a program offline for a Zeiss Contura CMM located in our Westlake Ohio A2LA Accredited lab. Offline programs can run simulations to determine the required probe styli configurations and best setup to maximum accessibility. An OMNI Structures modular fixture system was used to elevate and hold the part in a secure repeatable orientation. Soon half a dozen parts were measured for all dimensions and a capability report on another 25 samples was emailed.
